The Human Healing Journey
Te Taha Wairua - a spiritual lense
There comes a time in our lives when everything seems to hit the fan. Where we have normally been able to manage ourselves, we find ourselves not coping, and acting and feeling uncharacteristically. It is at times like these that we KNOW deep down we need to change and ultimately evolve, but in order to do this, we have to shed, unlearn and undo layers of trauma and outdated conditioning that no longer serve us. Some people call this the 'dark night of the soul' and it can be utterly disorientating and earth shattering. It is at such points in a human's lifetime that the mind and heart tends to open to possibilities and options we may never have considered before.
During times like these, we can take a spiritual lens that sees every individual as having a divine life path and purpose, and when things get too far off track, we experience a painful wake up call. Because of our pervasive 'suck it up and move on' conditioning, once the lid pops off, with a lifetime of unfinished business to boot, it can feel very messy, and we often need support to move towards resolution. It can take years if so much has been built up over time. But this wake up call is ultimately healing and supporting us to live in integrity, with no regrets. It is calling us to live life consciously and in alignment with who we truly are meant to become in this lifetime. |
Ultimately a life led consciously is one that accepts reality, can detect issues as they emerge, and more easily discern truth as different choice points emerge throughout our lives. It is a life led with integrity and authenticity. We learn, as described so eloquently in the serenity prayer, to accept what we cannot change, have the courage to change what we can, and the wisdom to know the difference. This path less travelled (and avoided for many for as long as possible, including myself) can ultimately be life-changing. As we learn more about ourselves and how to navigate our lives, with more integrity, we can begin to feel more at peace inside. As the coping mechanisms to shut out what we have feared throughout our lives also dampen our ability to see and experience what we love, we are more able to naturally and fully take in the beauty that is surrounds us. We are less afraid of what is hard and have the skills to work through challenges as they come up. We understand that life is the ultimate teacher.
Through this kind of journey we may become more open to spirituality, be that an approach to life and/or a practice, whatever that looks like to the individual. It is also possible we may find ourselves having a growing capacity for faith and communication with the unseen and unspoken. In Te ao Māori the spiritual essence of a person is their Mauri (life force). Without life force, we are without health so developing faith, whatever faith that may look like to the individual, to support you to face what brings you pain, has the capacity to lead you home to yourself, your truth, your true life path, and your essential life force. Ultimately it leads you back to health and wholeness. |
